- The charging operation takes place not far from the city centre, but in a countryside area, surrounded by nature. The position allows to enjoy the surrounding landscape in all its glory. This special framework allows you to have a first-hand experience in real time of the process of energy creation, storage and charging.
- The service is DIS(ev)ABLED FRIENDLY. The entrance to the area is granted through an automatic gate, while the charging up point was developed with a dedicated lowered display.
- Charging operations take place with total safety inside a dedicated delimited area with video-surveillance. An automatic gate allows the access to the area only to identified vehicles.
- LaREU ultra-fast charging station is only 5 km / 5 min from the Udine Sud highway exit, in a strategic position in the Friuli – Venezia Giulia region.
STATE OF THE ART
LaREU was developed with a “smart grid” target. The renewable energy source plant is connected to the national energy grid as well as the ultra-fast charging station.
- The first part of the LaREU project was focused on demonstrating the actual feasibility for the process of local energy creation and charging. This allowed to fully satisfy the needs of the evdrivers to reduce the waiting times for charging up their electric vehicles*.
- LaREU activated the hydroelectric plant for the production of clean energy since Q1 2017. In addition to this, the ultra-fast charging service was added in Q1 2023.
*: Charging times are influenced by multiple factors (for instance: ambient and battery temperature, battery capacity, previous charge of the vehicle, type of charging, etc.)
THE NEXT STEPS, A CONTINUOUS EVOLUTION
LaREU is currently active in the study of the storage process of the clean energy produced by the renewable energy source plants.
- The research is aimed at the development of dedicated energy storage systems. The target is to favour the expansion on a large scale of ultra-fast charging systems powered by renewable energy source plants of any dimension.
- In this way, it will not be necessary to have high-power renewable energy source plants to charge electric vehicles with an ultra-fast system.
- There are some energy storage solutions to reach high-power and it is possible to find them on the market. However, these solutions have a not the best cost/benefits ratio, especially when dealing with small sources of renewable energy.
